Over the next few weeks and months I will be adding to these pages with information about the detrimental effects computers and technology are having on our planet.

It does seem like a miracle that we can speak with someone on the other side of the planet in real time, face to face and at no extra cost. In fact we are paying dearly for this privilege with our health, our sanity and the future of the Earth. Computers need to run fast and keep cool, the amount of energy necessary to cool just one server farm (many of these run the likes of Google, Microsoft and Apple) is enough to power a city. Server farms in the US use more power than all of their televisions (and there are a lot of them!

It's not all doom and gloom though, the industry is inventing ever more efficient components that use less power, run cooler (and last longer on their batteries) and use less toxic materials. There are rules in place for the disposal of waste electrical goods and we are all becoming aware of the importance of

Computers use electricity, if they're not set up correctly they can use nearly as much power when they're switched off. Always switch them off at the plug. (If everyone did this in the UK we'd need one less power station).
