AVG Antivirus - FR££ and has regular updates.

Spybot Search and Destroy - FR££. detects and destroys spyware.

AdAware - FR££. Download it from PCWorld catches things Spybot S&D misses, use them both.

IrfanView - Fast, FR££ picture viewer with many features.

Open Office - Recent tests have shown this to be the most compatible with Micro$oft Office. It seems impossible but it's FR££.

Google - THE internet search engine, set it as your homepage.

Google Downloads - The Toolbar lets you search instantly and blocks pop-ups.
Picasa Photo Organiser makes viewing your photo collection a real pleasure - some good image adjustment tools too, including 2-click red-eye removal, and it's FR££.
